When we last visited the carrot bed, I was harvesting what must have been the saddest-looking carrot in existence. Five weeks later, I returned for another inspection.
My container full of carrots was looking quite a bit better. That’s fertilizer for ya! (Note that the empty space in the carrot-top canopy at the bottom of the frame is where the premature carrot I plucked used to be growing.)
On closer examination, I noticed something wonderful: The orange head of a carrot poking above the soil. It appeared that my long-gestating carrots (it has been 107 days since I planted the seeds) were finally ready for harvest.
They were indeed. Look what another five weeks in the ground gets you. I sampled my carrot right away. It was sweet, tangy and superbly crunchy – everything you wish for in a homegrown carrot.
My patience was rewarded. Carrots might be the hare’s favorite food, but the tortoise won this race.
